Notes
- Ashy Storm-Petrel is a small dark greyish black seabird
- Facing a survival issue against a lot of different variables within its own environment
- The Ashy Storm-Petrel faces issues with invasive/aggressive animals such as mice, rats, cats seagulls
- The winter of 2008 the Wildlife Conservation Society was focusing its far-flung efforts on a small number of animals
- These are not the last of its problems but also faces issues of oil spills and the sea-level rising which does not help its situation either
- With all of these variables affecting the lifestyle of the Petrel, it only leaves 10,000 remaining in the world
- A Medical Triage is the decision making system that was created during the times of the Napoleonic Wars and other battles where they determined which will survive and which won't
- The conservation triage is being based off of medical triage which will determine the life of the Ashy Storm-Petrel
- Noah Principle is reference to Noah's Ark where every species regardless of what it is or impact it has on the humans and should ultimately be saved
- The people that are pushing for explicit triage are the Conservationists who are using a more systematic way of thinking and transparenct to practices that have been carried out implicitly for a long time.
- The different ways in order to make a triage decision is deciding based off of what they bring/contribute to the ecosystem and those who should be protected before others who only provide repetitive roles (Umbrella rule)
- Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) provides as an alternative program that emphasizes on prioritizing species on an approach with evolution coming first
- Researchers believe that this isn't the right approach when it comes to the triage and should be selecting it on the ecosystem itself rather than based on the species
- Agencies and Organizations are given the ability to be able to see what is going on to provide different places funding based on what needs to be saved, lost and what requires more budget to go through with it
- Placing more priorities helps as may allow different organizations and etc. to spend more money in funding on these types of conservation efforts being looked at
Summary
Many species are going through a tough issue that they are currently facing regarding to their today's environment and are at risks of going away. However rather than just being seen animals all needing to survive, it is now seen on if the animal itself provides a contribution. Basing them off of their value rather than just their overall endangerment which is a concerning way of thinking. Some of these species are literally on the brink of disappearing forever due to many variables that some humans have contributed to. Humans are not seeing them as their own but rather as items that contribute and help them. Seeing it more as "what economical gain can be received for caring about this certain animal", this shows their true concern for the animal regardless of how few is left. Researchers and Conservationalist have discussed on which of these species are indeed the most important to have around and which of them are not worth the effort of trying to keep around but have developed a way to make decisions. Using the method of Conservation Triage which is similar to medical triage where they determined what lives and what doesn't and is a method that they had done on the battlefield. Also determining by what role they play in their own ecosystem and umbrella which is based on what should be protected rather than others. This is a very crucial time as more negative effects will start to come if not figured out now on what to save and this could lead to more dying out
Opinion
After reading about this, I can't believe some people have this way of thinking as I see it as a very selfish way of thinking with what species should survive or not. Species survival should not be seen as an economical value for humans but just them in general as every animal deserves to live regardless of what role or value they may have. I believe that the Noah Principle is the best way of thinking as it makes everything equal which is the way it should be giving every animal a fair chance. Learning from reading other articles on the environment and how one animal taken out changes everything, allowing one to go extinct can cause more effects than we may be aware of. Such as taking the wolf out of the forest, this allowed an increase in population for the elk which lead to a decrease in the amount of trees. This is why some animals like the Petrel are not getting a fighting chance on survival as nobody is willing to help them out as they aren't seen as a contribution to animals which is terrible. Every animal deserve the same chance and should be treated like that as every life matters.
