Notes:
Summary:
Nitrogen is an important part of our planet as it is used in some way by everyone. Nitrogen is an element that cannot directly be transferred to humans and animals but can be through plants. The element is very difficult to obtain compared to other elements such as phosphorus and potassium. Realizing now that the use of this element is very important as it is key in helping create food production and many have tried finding ways to take advantage of it. Inventions are trying to be made in order to not use up all of the nitrogen and still remain to be green. Nitrogen that is escaped into the atmosphere and becoming nitrous oxide can have terrible effects onto the ozone and cause a greenhouse warming. Effort is being put to make the environment better and yet still use Nitrogen for food production.
Opinion:
After reading the article, I have learned that the need of nitrogen is important for everyone. Providing the necessary resources in soil with nitrogen filled fertilizer, this helps contribute to the overall growth in plants. Although that nitrogen does have its positives to the environment, this can still be dangerous as it can hurt the atmosphere. In the form of nitrous oxide, it can create affects that is dangerous to the ozone, stratosphere and others which isn't safe for our planet. I believe that it is great that there are those who are working on inventions to make it easier and less resources needed to get what they may need such as Ammonia. A way to synthesize Ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen is big break through and won't be the last invention to improve our world. Nitrogen is an essential part of our food production and will heavily needed to for the future.
- Human Society has a key chemical industry to thank for all agriculture-The producers of Nitrogen Fertilizer
- Nitrogen is needed for DNA and RNA, the molecules that store and transfer genetic information. Required to make proteins, messengers, receptors, catalysts and structural components of all plant and animal cells.
- Most important nitrogen-fixing bacteria are of the genus Rhizo-bium, symbionts that create nodules on the roots of leguminous plants, such as beans or acacia trees. The nitrogen-fixing bacteria living in the roots of these plants help enrich the fields with nitrogen.
- 19th Century scientist had finally started to understand the critical role that nitrogen in food production and the scarcity of its usable forms. Unlike phosphorus or potassium, nitrogen is more difficult to obtain than the other two.
- A breakthrough that came was with the invention of Ammonia Synthesis which was a workable scheme to synthesize ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen.
- Around 175 million tons of nitrogen flow into the world's croplands every year and half of this become incorporated into cultivated plants.
- Massive introduction of reactive nitrogen into soils and waters has many deleterious consequences for the environment. Many of the problems have a wide range from local health to global changes from just reactive nitrogen.
- Fertilizer nitrogen that escapes to ponds, lakes or ocean bays often causes eutrophication, the enrichment of waters by a previously scarce nutrient.
- Not only affecting soil and water but also the increasing use of nitrogen fertilizer have made more nitrous oxide into the atmosphere.
- Reactions of nitrous oxide with excited oxygen contribute to the destruction of ozone in the stratosphere and nitrous oxide promotes excessive greenhouse warming.
- Emissions of CO2 and the accompanying threat of global warming, can be reduced through a combination of economic and technical solutions.
- Best hope for reducing the growth in nitrogen use is more efficient ways to fertilize crops.
